In short

Classic murder mystery characters are the butler, the heir or heiress, the detective, the rival, the outsider and the victim. Each guest plays one as a suspect, with a booklet of backstory, secrets and round-by-round objectives. University Games kits cast 8 roles, Night of Mystery up to 20+, and the killer often learns their guilt mid-party.

In a murder mystery party, every guest is a suspect, and the characters are what make the evening run. Each role is a small script: who you are, what you want, what you hide, and what you must find out. Get the casting right and even quiet guests have something to do all night. Below are the classic roles, how they work inside a kit, how many you need and how to hand them out. For the full evening plan, see how to host a murder mystery party.

Classic murder mystery characters

Most party kits recycle a handful of archetypes, each with a clear job in the story:

ArchetypeJob in the storyExamples from published kits
Butler or housekeeperSees everything, says little, knows the houseUniversity Games’ Murder on Misty Island casts the group’s former college housemother as host
Heir or heiressHas the most to gain and family business to hideA staple of country-house and family-fortune settings
Detective or investigatorAsks the questions and runs the investigationNight of Mystery’s “Investigator”, played by the host or a guest, reads the instructions after the murder
RivalAn old partner, a jilted fiancé or a competitor with a grudgeThree contestants competing for the same title in Cruising for Murder
OutsiderA critic, reporter or newcomer nobody can vouch forCruising for Murder’s travel critic, who uses influence “to help (and hurt)”
VictimStarts the drama, then often keeps playingNight of Mystery’s victim learns the role on arrival and returns to help investigate

Every kit adds characters that fit its setting. Cruising for Murder fills a ship with a captain, a cruise director, a purser, a showgirl, a deckhand and a port authority officer; Murder on Misty Island gathers eight former housemates, from a TV actress to a charter boat skipper.

What a character gets in a party kit

Publishers package roles differently, but the pieces are similar:

PublisherCast sizeWhat each guest receivesHow the story moves
University Games, Murder Mystery Party (Murder on Misty Island)8 playersA character booklet with a background page, public and private information, and chapters read on the host’s signalRounds called chapters (three in the booklet rules); everyone reveals the required information in each, then accuses at the end
Night of Mystery (Cruising for Murder)8-12, 10-15, 15-20 and 20+ versionsA character description with costume and acting tips, secret objectives for each stage, a name tag and play moneyTwo rounds of objectives, before and after the murder, then evidence and accusations
My Mystery PartyGames written with up to 75 rolesA character with a new clue card for each roundRounds of clues, then the reveal

The background is the public story you tell other guests. The secrets are what you protect unless someone asks the right question. The objectives are tasks such as “get the gossip”, “blackmail a rival” or “clear your name”, which Night of Mystery gives in sealed envelopes so they arrive at the right moment.

Rules of honesty matter. University Games’ instructions say every player must answer questions truthfully but need not volunteer more than asked, and only the murderer is allowed to lie.

Does the culprit know?

In many kits, no, at least not at the start. Night of Mystery’s host files say the murderer will not know they are the killer until they open their second envelope at the party, and the victim only learns their role on arrival. The rules printed in University Games’ character booklets say that, at some point in the game, the murderer will be told in their booklet and given information to help them avoid detection. My Mystery Party writes that its murderer does not know until it is time to know.

This design protects the host, too: the killer cannot give the game away in the first hour, and nobody is stuck holding a secret for weeks. A few kits do tell the culprit in advance so they can bluff from the start, which suits groups who enjoy acting. Read the host guide before casting, because it changes who you give the role to.

How many roles you need

Count your confirmed guests first, then buy. Night of Mystery asks hosts to confirm attendance before ordering, since each size is written separately: moving from a 10-15 version to 15-20 changes existing storylines, not just the cast list. University Games boxes are built for exactly eight suspects.

Kits sort roles into two groups:

  • Essential roles: the victim, the murderer and any character the solution or the evidence names. You cannot cut them.
  • Optional roles: witnesses, staff and colorful extras that add side plots. Night of Mystery includes instructions for removing characters without affecting the mystery. University Games welcomes drop-in guests without a role: they hold no secret clue but can still question suspects.

If you have an odd number or a late cancellation, the optional list is your safety net. If you have extra guests, give them investigator or reporter duties rather than inventing a suspect.

How to assign characters

Night of Mystery tells hosts to read the character descriptions and match each role to the guest who best fits that personality. A few practical rules:

  • Big roles to big personalities. My Mystery Party suggests giving the victim role to your most outgoing guest, since that character has to start the drama.
  • Shy guests get clear objectives. Pick roles with concrete tasks over roles built on speeches. Objectives give a quiet player a reason to approach people.
  • Couples: pairing real partners as story-world spouses is easy, but splitting them can create better conversations. Ask before you cast a couple as rivals or ex-partners.
  • Gender: many kits include gender-neutral roles; Cruising for Murder lists 2 to 5 in its 15-20 guest version. Most other roles work with a new first name.
  • Content: some publishers offer “clean” or teen versions. Check the version before you buy for a mixed or family group.

If you plan to play, do not read the other booklets. Night of Mystery says the host can join in without knowing the killer by skipping the solution file until after the party.

Send the roles in advance

Guests need time to read and plan a costume. Night of Mystery recommends sending invitations three to four weeks ahead when costumes are involved, then character sheets once guests confirm. University Games asks hosts to deliver invitations so participants have a few days to get into character, and its invitations list costume options. Send only the background part; sealed objectives and clues stay with you until the night. Choosing a kit by its characters

Read the character list before you buy. Check the number of essential roles, the gender breakdown, whether the host can play, and whether the murderer knows in advance. Our guide on how to choose a murder mystery party kit walks through those checks, and the best murder mystery party games compares kits by cast size. More guides sit in the murder mystery party hub.

Key facts

FAQ

How many characters are in a murder mystery party?

It depends on the kit. University Games' Murder Mystery Party boxes are written for 8 players, while downloadable kits such as Night of Mystery come in sizes like 8-12, 10-15, 15-20 and 20+ guests. Buy the version that matches your confirmed guest count, because a larger version can change the storylines, not just add names.

Does the murderer know they are the murderer?

Often not at first. Night of Mystery's killer finds out on opening their second envelope during the party, University Games tells the murderer in their booklet partway through, and My Mystery Party keeps it hidden until it is time to know. A few kits tell the culprit in advance, so check the host guide.

Can the host play a character too?

Usually yes. Night of Mystery says the host can play fully without knowing the killer or the victim by skipping the solution file until after the party. University Games asks the host to assign a role to every participant, including themselves.

What happens if a guest cancels at the last minute?

Look for the list of optional characters in the host guide. Night of Mystery includes instructions for reducing the character count without breaking the mystery. Never drop a character the solution depends on; ask a friend to step in or read that role yourself.

Can guests play a character of a different gender?

Yes. Many kits now include gender-neutral roles, and most characters work with a changed name and pronoun. Night of Mystery publishes the gender breakdown of each version so you can check before buying.
