In short

For a classic dinner of eight adults, the best murder mystery party game is University Games' Pasta, Passion & Pistols, where the host plays a suspect too. Choose Talking Tables' 1920s Theatre kit for a reusable box with three endings, or Broadway Murder Mysteries' Murder at the Roller Rink for anywhere from 4 to 20 guests.

Murder mystery party game — A boxed kit that casts each guest as a suspect in an invented crime, gives everyone a character booklet or script, and releases clues in rounds until the group accuses a killer and the solution is read.

Our picks

Best classic dinner party

Murder Mystery Party: Pasta, Passion & Pistols

The long-running University Games format: a New York Italian restaurant mystery with eight character booklets, invitations, name tags and a party planner with recipes. According to the rules, six suspects must attend, two roles are optional and the host keeps a character, so nobody sits out. It is rated for adults and does not work with fewer than six guests.

Best reusable kit

Talking Tables Host Your Own Murder Mystery: 1920s Theatre

A 1922 theatre audition interrupted by a murder, with 12 characters, weapon props and three color-coded sets of clue cards, each leading to a different solution, so one box can host three parties. The host plays the theatre manager, who is not a suspect and learns the answer with everyone else. Clues are short cards, so groups who want heavy deduction may find it light.

Best for a big or changing guest list

Broadway Murder Mysteries: Murder at the Roller Rink

Twenty scripted suspect roles with flexible genders cover 4 to 20 players, and extra guests can join as detectives, so late RSVPs and cancellations do not break the story. An online host dashboard adds detective videos, an invitation tool and costume ideas. The publisher rates it easy and says costumes come first and clues second.

Best if your guests won't act

Hunt A Killer: Homicide at the Heist

No characters to play: the whole party investigates a diamond heist that ended in a death, working through case files, personal items and locked puzzles. Hunt A Killer rates it 2 out of 5 for difficulty and 90 to 120 minutes of play, which suits four to six guests who prefer solving to performing. It is a case rather than a cast, so it does not stretch to a crowd.

What counts as a murder mystery party game

A murder mystery party game gives every guest a role. Each person receives a character booklet or script with a name, a secret or two and a reason to have wanted the victim gone. Over three rounds, guests reveal what their character knows, question each other and collect clues, then everyone accuses a suspect before the solution is read aloud. The host runs the clock, hands out the next round of material and, in most kits, plays a character as well.

That is different from a boxed case, where a small group reads documents and nobody acts. If you are not sure which one your group wants, our guide to murder mystery game vs party sets out the difference. We included one boxed case on this list, Hunt A Killer’s Homicide at the Heist, for hosts whose guests would rather investigate than perform.

How many characters, and what happens with extra guests

Guest count decides more than any other feature, because a story written for eight suspects falls apart with five.

  • Pasta, Passion & Pistols is built for eight. According to the rules, six suspects must be present for the story to work, and the two remaining roles are optional extras that can be left out. A ninth guest has no booklet.
  • Talking Tables’ theatre kit is the most flexible of the classic formats. The host’s instructions say it needs at least five players including the host and takes up to 12 guests. Four named characters must be cast every time; the rest are drawn as needed.
  • Murder at the Roller Rink carries 20 scripted roles with flexible genders and works for 4 to 20 players. Extra guests can join as detectives, which is the simplest answer to the friend who RSVPs the day before.
  • Homicide at the Heist has no roles, so the limit is the table. Four to six people can share the documents comfortably.

How much the host has to prepare

Every kit asks the host to send invitations with character assignments a week or two ahead. After that, the work differs.

University Games’ rules tell the host not to read the character booklets or listen to the audio in advance, so you discover the solution with your guests. The kit includes a party planner with a menu, recipes and decorating tips, and the publisher posts audio tracks for its Murder Mystery Party games on its website.

Talking Tables asks for a quick read of the whole booklet before the evening, then a short setup: name badges, the three rounds of clue cards laid face down, a sealed solution envelope for the color you picked, and a staged crime scene plus nine prop weapons hidden around the house for a weapon hunt. The booklet scripts what the host reads aloud at each stage.

Broadway Murder Mysteries moves much of the preparation online. The listing describes a host dashboard with an invitation tool that emails each guest their character and costume suggestions, plus detective videos, tutorials and music playlists. The kit itself holds a host guide, an evidence booklet, evidence files, 20 character scripts, a question menu and award certificates.

Hunt A Killer needs almost no preparation: open the box and start reading. Keep a phone nearby, since the case uses online steps. Our guide on how to host a murder mystery party includes a full hour-by-hour plan for the night.

What comes in the box

  • Character material: booklets with background and secrets (University Games), name, trait and occupation cards (Talking Tables), or full scripts (Broadway Murder Mysteries).
  • Invitations: printed invitations and envelopes in the University Games box; printable or emailed invitations for Talking Tables and Broadway Murder Mysteries.
  • Name tags and badges: included by University Games and Talking Tables.
  • Clues: printed clues in every kit, weapon props in the Talking Tables box, evidence files and a question menu in the Broadway kit.
  • Audio and video: an audio narrator for University Games, detective videos for Broadway Murder Mysteries, none for Talking Tables.
  • Extras: award trophies (Talking Tables) or certificates (Broadway) for best detective, best costume and best performance.

How the rounds and the reveal work

The kits share a three-act shape but end the evening differently.

In Pasta, Passion & Pistols, each round opens with guests reading from their booklets, followed by open questioning, then a narrated summary. The rules say booklets give background and direction rather than word-for-word dialogue, so guests improvise. After the accusations, the narrator reveals the murderer and the full solution.

In the Talking Tables kit, guests introduce themselves in character, hunt for the prop weapons, then draw clue cards round by round, with an optional conversation starter deciding who goes first. Revealed clues go into a police crime file on the table so anyone can check them. At the end, each guest fills in an accusation form naming the killer, the motive and the reasoning, and defends it aloud before the host opens the envelope.

Broadway Murder Mysteries uses full scripts, a question menu and detective videos to move the story along, which makes it the easiest of the three for guests who freeze when asked to improvise.

In Homicide at the Heist, there is no reveal speech. According to TheGamer’s 2023 review, the case mixes padlock combinations and password-locked folders with physical documents and digital resources, and the group works as one team toward a single answer.

Settings, tone and age

Each kit on this list has a different setting, which makes costumes easy to plan: a New York Italian restaurant, a 1922 theatre, a 1980s roller rink and a diamond heist. The tone is comic rather than dark, with pun names and rivalries instead of graphic detail. Age ratings differ, though. University Games rates Pasta, Passion & Pistols for adults, Talking Tables recommends 16 and up, Hunt A Killer lists 14 and up, and the Broadway listing describes its kits as for adults and teens. Read the character list before casting younger guests.

How to pick between them

  • A sit-down dinner for exactly eight adults: Pasta, Passion & Pistols. The rounds fit around courses and the host plays.
  • A group that will want to play again: the Talking Tables theatre kit, whose three endings let you host it three times.
  • A big, uncertain guest list, or teens and adults together: Murder at the Roller Rink, with 20 roles and room for detectives.
  • Friends who dread acting: Homicide at the Heist, a team investigation with no lines to deliver.
  • A birthday: any of the first three, with the guest of honor cast in a juicy role. Our murder mystery birthday party guide covers invitations, cake and timing.

If you are still weighing guest count, setting and preparation time, our guide on how to choose a murder mystery party kit walks through each criterion with a decision grid.

What else you will need on the night

None of these kits includes food, pens for every guest or costumes. Plan for a pen and a notepad per player, a meal or snacks that can be eaten while talking, and a soft playlist from the right decade. Ask guests to dress for their character: a 1920s theatre calls for cloche hats and bow ties, a 1980s roller rink for neon colors, scrunchies and bright windbreakers. Our murder mystery party costumes guide has outfit ideas for each era, and the murder mystery party topic gathers every guide for hosts.

Key facts

How we selected these games

We started from murder mystery party kits sold on Amazon.com and in stock on October 25, 2026, and kept boxed kits that cast guests as characters or, in one case, let a party investigate together without roles. Each pick had to state its player count, age rating and contents, and we checked those claims against publishers' pages and host instructions where they were available. We kept one kit per setting and one per publisher. We left out kits whose story or menu is built around drinking, kits sold on adult-only humor, kits with graphic content, and decoration sets that contain no game. We have not run these parties ourselves: the descriptions come from publishers' information, rulebooks and published reviews. Affiliate commissions do not decide which kits appear or their order.

FAQ

What is the best murder mystery party game for beginners?

A kit with a step-by-step host guide and a fixed structure. Talking Tables' 1920s Theatre kit scripts the host's lines round by round, and Broadway Murder Mysteries rates Murder at the Roller Rink as easy, with videos that move the story along. University Games' Pasta, Passion & Pistols uses an audio narrator between rounds.

How many people do you need for a murder mystery party game?

It depends on the kit. Pasta, Passion & Pistols needs six suspects and takes eight. The Talking Tables theatre kit runs from five players including the host up to 12 guests. Broadway Murder Mysteries kits have 20 roles for 4 to 20 players, plus extra guests as detectives.

Can the host play in a murder mystery party game?

In all the kits on this list, yes. The Pasta, Passion & Pistols rules tell the host to keep a character, and the Talking Tables host plays the theatre manager without knowing the solution, which sits in a sealed envelope. In Hunt A Killer's Homicide at the Heist there is no host role at all.

Can you reuse a murder mystery party kit?

Usually not with the same guests, because the solution does not change. Talking Tables is the exception here: its three color-coded clue sets lead to three different endings. Other kits can be played again with a new group if the booklets were not written on.

How long does a murder mystery party game last?

Plan for two to three hours of play. University Games lists about two hours for Pasta, Passion & Pistols, and Hunt A Killer lists 90 to 120 minutes for Homicide at the Heist. Dinner, arrivals and costume photos add time to the evening.
